Fixing 04 Sienna Passenger Side Mirror

A little while ago the passenger side mirror on my 04 Toyota Sienna CE was smashed. I called the dealer to price a new one and was quoted $330.00 + tax and installation (ouch). I decided to find one elsewhere and install it myself. What follows is a series of pictures I hope will help someone else in a similar situation.
First of all I got the details of the mirror from the dealer based on the VIN (there are many variations and using the VIN will obtain the right match). My mirror was power + heated with no auto-dimmer. I called around starting with Canadian Tire who said I should try NAPA Autoparts who then directed me to their supplier CMAX. Their price came to $72!! (incl tax). It took 2 days for them to get it to Ottawa from Toronto.

Here is a picture of my smashed mirror.

Here is a picture of my new mirror out of the box

Let me start with a picture of the final step before unplugging and unbolting the broken mirror. This is were you should end up after following the steps below:

Step 1. Remove Bracket Garnish
From the top, pop out the cover using a flat head screwdriver and pivot it out to remove.

Step 2. Remove Inside Handle Bezel
Pull the door handle open and pop out the bezel (plastic cover)

Step 3. Remove the armrest
A. Open the armrest door and remove the screw inside.

B. Start at the outside end of the armrest and use a flat-head screwdriver pry up the armrest.

Here is a closeup of the clip at the end of the armrest. You have to push it in with the screwdriver to disengage it.

The middle portion of the armrest has a clip that must also be disengaged.

Finally disconnect the electrical connectors.

Here is a close-up of the connector. Push the middle portion of the clip inwards to extract it.

Step 4. Remove the trim board sub-assembly (underneath the armrest)
(3 screws)

Step 5. Remove 2 additional screws that hold on the door panel.
Screw 1 is under the previously remove trim sub-assembly.

Screw 2 is where the door handle is.

Step 6. Remove the door panel clips
There is one screw-type clip at the outer edge of the door.

and 9 pop-type clips around the door.

Step 7. Lift up the door panel to loosen and gain access to the power wires and securing nuts for the mirror. Disconnect the power wires and remove the 3 nuts and the mirror will pull off from the outside of the door.

Installation is the reverse of the removal.

I hope this helps.

Following your instruction, I fixed my 06' Sienna driver side mirror. The pics are really helpful. Thanks!

Your directions are very good. I recently changed the passenger side door mirror on my Sienna LE 2006 which was the same as yours.

The only thing I would like to add is that this took me about 1 hour to complete. Also I had to keep changing the tape on my screwdriver, as it kept coming off.

This was fantastic! I saved myself over $200 just in parts alone. It took me only 1 hour and 10 minutes, with a 11 yr old helping as well. The pictures were exactly what I needed to complete this. Thanks!

Awesome instructions. Even this mom installed it in an hour and a half, while entertaining a 7 month old baby in the van.

I want to add my experience on removing door panel. First there is no clips on the top portion of the door panel. I also found it easier to use my fingers, instead of the screwdriver. There is a small opening close to the side mirror that you can get your fingers in. Just slowly run the fingers down until the clips pop.

Otherwise, the pictures and instructions are right on the money. Thanks!

only took me 30 mins to replace the mirror. excellent directions!! pics really helped alot

Thank you so much - took me and my father-in-law 30 minutes!

We traded our 02 for an 05 with fewer miles. The 05 is longer and wider. I left much of the plastic from the passenger's side mirror on the garage floor. My wife left the whole mirror there 1 week later. Thanks to you, we fixed the mirror in 45 minutes, the extra 15 needed to check the heated mirror wires for power. No power. Toyota uses the same mirrors regardless. THANK YOU!

Anonymous said...

Great write up!

It took me about 15 minutes. Toyota quotes 1.25 hours of labor to replace a mirror.

Be careful disengaging the clips on the armrest. The plastic is really thin on the support block.

Thank you very much, $65 and it was done, quickly w/ your pics. Very nice of you, thanks again, Mark

Great instructions with pics. Came in very handy. Keep it up. Thanx.
I however notice that the new OEM mirror vibrates a lot. Does anybody know how to fix it?

Excellent instructions. The dealer quoted $330. We did it as you instructed for $75 (mirror + shipping). Your generosity in sharing your expertise is something we all should admire.

Try tightening the 3 recessed screws underneath the mirror, it may stop the vibration.

Thanks so much. I'm not all that mechanical and this would have taken forever without the details. The whole thing only took about ten minutes.

Awesome instructions, the pictures helped a lot, took me about 30 min.

It even works on the UK version of the Powervan.... only the door lock mech needs to slide forward and out after the screw is removed to release the clips.
Cheers.

Thank you! Your instructions made this an incredibly easy job--I could not have done it without them. Truly very generous of you to share this. Blessings!

Thank you for you post! The dealer quoted $260 for the mirror, I don't how much they would charge for the labor. I bought the mirror from some online auto parts site for $50 including shipping and tax. It took me 80 minutes to install the mirror. The most difficult part was to take off the panel once all screws were removed, all you have to do is to insert flat screw driver between the metal and plastic and pry, don't be afraid :) I can't say how much I appreciate your post.

S Rooks said...

I can not thank you enough!!! I still had to drop $350 to buy the colour-matched mirror from Toyota (they gave me a pity $50 discount) because my wife wouldn't go with getting the black aftermarket mirror painted Desert Sand - but at least I saved the $150 labour for installation. Without your instructions and pictures though, I probably would have broken something else along the way!!

Anonymous said...

You rock. This is exactly what I needed. Saved me tons of time and probably a broken door panel.

Anonymous said...

you saved me a few hours and a lot of cussing. Thank you, keep it up!

Excellent instructions. The pictures made the difference between my completing this properly or my breaking something in the process. Really appreciated showing where the handle clips are, and how to remove them.

Anonymous said...

Thank you, thank you! Your instructions and pictures were perfect! The dealer quoted us $475 for the part, plus $185 for labor. I paid $51, including shipping and had this installed in less than an hour. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. We are so grateful!

Impressive! I can't thank you enough. What were the odds of finding specific details and pictures to fix an 04 Sienna Passenger Side Mirror? It's as if you posted this just for me. :-) It took my husband and I 20 min's to replace the mirror and saved us at least $250 overall.

Screw 2 is where the door handle is. -- I can't found 2nd screw.
and 9 pop-type clips around the door. -- I see one where your screw driver is, be afraid to broken the clips, try kind of hard cannot release it

Unknown said...

thank you very much I did it!
1. I need to remove the small piece under/beside the window handle then I see 2nd screw.
2. yeah pry out the door panel pins, don't be afraid
3. I can tighten the 3 mirror screws even I put door panel back. I realized later it may be better to low down glass.

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much. I don't think I would have been able to complete the job without the pictures. Start to finish took me exactly 50 minutes. Only tricky part was taking off the door panel. Other than that it's a fairly simple job.

Me to, called the dealer and they wanted around $400 installed. So 2005 Sienna - I purchased on line at $40, and used these awesome instructions. Thank you so much for the detail and photos!!!!

The online mirror looks 98% identical. Only difference I notice, is that mirror itself, not the mounting, is not as rigid, and I expect to see some mirror vibration on bumpy roads. Good trade off to $400 though.

Anonymous said...

Thanks so much. I was able to save around $300 by following your instruction. Installed it by myself, took around an hour or less. My very first time, now I feel like a veteran. Your step by step pictures surely helps a lot. Paid $45.23USD including S&H, no tax at that, too. Terrific job!!!

Awesome instructions - worked perfect for my '08 Sienna. My biggest issue was reconnecting the electrical connector - seemed kind of fragile but best way was to just force it. Thanks for your instructions!

I used the instructions to replace the door glass on a 2004 Toyota Sienna.

Additional instructions for the glass:
1. Remove all the loose glass from the vertical track that the glass sits in.
2. Lower the scissor frame that the glass sits in about as far as it will go. you will need to plug in the electrical connector for the window switch to make this work.
3. Remove the 4 x 10mm bolts that hold the speaker and disconnect the speaker wire. Also peel back the plastic on the opposite side of the door.
4. Remove the 2 x 10mm bolts that hold the glass.
5. Slip the glass in from the top of the door frame, sliding it into the window track as you go.
6. Bolt the new glass in (it goes BEHIND the scissor frame.
7. Bolt everything back together and carefully raise and lower the glass to make sure it is tracking correctly.

took me nearly two hours, but i'm not mechanically inclined. I didn't take the whole door panel off, just the the top left corner near the mirror and the top. Thanks so much for the post and pics. You are awesome! The pics really made this easy to follow. My husband & I replaced the mirror and panels in 45 minutes. I ordered from the dealer 'cuz ours is XLE, but we saved lots of dealer time to replace this.

Unknown said...

Hey, thanks for sharing these steps. The photos made it a lot easier to follow and saved me some extra time to go for repairs. I started to take interest in used car dealerships (Orange County) when I was in CA last year. Since then, I considered used cars (Anaheim) as one of the best buys in the market. The 2009 Toyota RAV4 FWD 4dr 4-cyl 4-Spd AT which I'm eyeing only costs less than $18,000. I bookmarked this post in case I experience the same thing with my car again. Thanks!

Thank you! I bought the mirror for my '07 Sienna from Rockauto.com for $54 and followed your directions. Was done in 45 min. and the most tinkering I usually do is in the kitchen - I'm a SAHM. You saved our family more than $200 based on quotes from a body shop and dealer. For future DIYers: this is a very kid-friendly project. I wish I had waited for my 8yo to be home. Thank you!

Very helpful
I had done this on my '00 Sienna w/o instructions a few years ago and had taken longer and also damaged the pop-up clips.

With the pics and instructions this time on my '08 Sienna, this was done in an hour ( Also taught one of my sons how to do this).

The only 2 comments I will add are 1) the clip that needs to be pushed near the door handle takes some work
2) Having 2 people (one to help) is good. The helper can hold the door insulation panel...there are some wiring attached to it and it is better to ensure those do not come off.

Thanks again

Thanks so much for your post! The instructions were spot on! They really give you the confidence to pry a little because you know you are doing it the right way.

I replaced the passenger side mirror on our 2004 Sienna today. I removed the broken one at lunch time in about 15-20 minutes and put the new one on this afternoon in 10-15 minutes.

Thanks a lot for tips. Images were very helpful too. I did it for my Sienna 2004 Limited AWD XLE in about one hour as per your instruction. I left a very minor scratch on the side door since I wasn't careful with the tip of the screw driver while removing the clips in the last step, the tape I had on it was not enough. Saved about $50 for the installation by the dealer. bought the side mirror from an auto part dealer in Toronto for about $70, painted it for about $110(by Toyota dealer to match the other side mirror). Total $180 compared to $450 quoted by the Toyota dealer.

Fixed my '06 Sienna drivers side mirror with your directions in about 30 minutes. Great help! I would add that at least on my van the plastic clip connecting the wiring harness to the window and lock control buttons in the armrest has a plastic sleeve that has to be pulled back (toward the wires) before it will reinsert and connect. Not a big deal, but took me a few moments to figure out. Thank you so very very much.

I have a 2005 Sienna LE and I did the replacement today. I am not a handyman and just a regular person that feels no one should be taken by the Stealership. The Stealership wanted $375 + tax ..what are you smoking?! If I can do this anyone can..I am not a handyman, just a regular person that feels people should not be taken.

BTW (slightly off topic): You can replace your air filters YOURSELF also..do not pay $60 for Stealership. Just go to Kragen or Auto? and buy the part..it takes about one minute to replace this.

Anyway back to the program...

I purchased the replacement passenger side mirror from Amazon for $24.95, shipped. The quality is just as good as OEM and fits like a glove.

The only tools I used were a flat-head driver, Phillips-head driver and a socket wrench (for the mirror bolts).

This is an ammendment/update to the above set of instructions which I feel are very important:

PREFACE!! ** Before you put everything back together and slap in the panel, just check to see if you can control the passenger mirror and window from the driver side control panel..makes sense right?

Okay, onward to the ammendments/updates:

1. Once you are ready to take off the panel, just take off the upper left-hand portion of the door panel. It may seem tight but you can get a finger in there and then just slowly move it open (towards you). Don't worry it will not break. I had it wide enough to use my socket wrench HORIZONTALLY to take off the mirror bolts..about 1.5 feet open for me..trust me..it will not break. There is no need to remove the entire door panel (I didn't..and it may be a real pain if you do)

2. The picture above shows that you are to remove the electrical plug underneath the armrest - NO!! The actual plug that needs to be removed is from the mirror itself. Keep the plugs underneath the armrest panel INTACT. There are two seperate sets of plugs. The picture looks confusing. Just remove the mirror plug. You will CLEARLY see this once you open up the upper left hand side of the door panel.

3. To attache the door panel back onto the door you will need to push up and over the panel so that it will clasp INSIDE the window sill. If it's not tight and flush, you need to pull up harder and push harder into the window sill. This is probably the hardest part..not really though. Don't fret/sweat..if you look from the side you will see there is a lip that hangs from the door panel that MUST go over and into the window sill.

I did this repair/replacement in under 30 minutes (for you prior Lego fans this is a breeze..seriously). This post is taking me longer than what the replacement did..really.

If anyone has a problem or wants to ask me a questions regarding replacing your mirror drop me an email: motleynation(at)gmail(dot)com

I'll be more than glad to help!!

Great post. I also just did this repair in less than 30 minutes. As one of the other commenters said the only plug you remove is the mirror one - on my van it was attached to the door itself right near the mirror and NOT as the picture shows under the door handle. I have a 2011 Sienna with a broken side mirror. Bought a replacement on Amazon for $140, but had no idea how to install it. The 2011 model is too new to have any instructions online on how to replace the mirror. Found your pictures for the old model, I thought I would give a try. It worked out perfectly just as you listed! Only the panel part was a bit different, as Toyota is making improvements for an easy installation.
Thank you so much for giving such a great detailed instruction to everyone!

Thanks for the instructions & photos. The only unforseen problem I had was that the pins that clip the panel to the door were ruined when we removed the panel. The auto shop didn't have the right ones, so I ordered a box online. I suppose I could have gone to the dealer but was already fed up with their price quote so I didn't want to give them my business. We drove around a week with the door panel loose, but it wasn't that big a deal. Now I have extra pins for next time (and there will be a next time because I have already broken it twice...if only I could fix stupid). It may benefit you to order the clips when you order the mirror. They are cheap.

Many Thanks - Followed these instructions and was successful to replace the passenger side Mirros of 2005 Sienna. Bought the mirroor from Amazon for $75 and fixed using these instructions. Dealership wanted $300 parts + $100 labor + taxes. Thank you for this invaluable instructions with pictures and for saving money to so many of us.

I had already ordered the mirror and was in the process of searching for instructions online. I was looking for a video, but found this instead on the day that the mirror arrived - thank goodness.

I found the part online for approx. $40. The dealership wanted $410 for the complete job, so you can see how much this post saved me. It took about 35 minutes, but that was mostly because when I removed the door panel, most of the plastic fasteners stayed in their holes on the door versus popping out with the panel.

I'd just add a couple of things:

1) Do test the mirror before putting the panel back on. It would be a shame if it didn't work and you had to remove it again.

2) If the plastic fasteners do remain in the door as I described above, it's easier to just remove the fasteners from the door and slide them into their respective slots on the door panel versus trying to force the slots in the door panel over the fastener heads when trying to replace the panel. A pair of needle-nosed pliers (used gently) and a flathead screwdriver worked fine for me. Just grab the head of the fastener and pull genltly away from the door just enough to get the flathead behind the head of the fastener.

Once again, thanks for the awesome instructions. This has to be the best set of instructions I've seen online for a DIY job.

Anonymous said...

Oh, forgot to add that it might be good to have some extra fasteners on hand for the door panel before you begin the job. I know that you can get those at the dealership, but maybe they can be ordered online as well.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post these instructions with pictures. A tree branch fell and knocked most of the mirror off. The glass was already smashed due to a kids football. The dealer had mentioned it would be around $500 to fix it. I found your posting and found the courage to tackle this myself. I found the part on eBay from a reputable seller for $42 incl shipping. I was able to install the mirror in about 1 hour. Your instructions and the plethora of tips others left helped me big time. No broken clips and no scratches. THANKS!!!

The directions worked like a charm to fix the mirror on my 2006 Toyota Sienna. Total cost = $43 (mirror) + $41 (ticket for expired safety inspection, which failed, you guessed it, for the mirror) + a coupe of scrapes on my knuckles while loosening the door (I was working outside on a cold day) - totally worth it.
Thanks a million - posts like this reinforce my faith in the Internet.

This design is incredible! You definitely know how to keep a reader entertained.
Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to
start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Great job. I really enjoyed
what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it.
Too cool!

Good pics and instructions. Followed instructions, but I didn't have to remove the door panel. I pried panel loose from the top, then used a block of wood to keep pried away so I could work behind the panel. Best way to make $400/hour in saved money! Thanks.

Good Value Mate. Thank you. I would add 1 thing be careful of the 9 plastic plug when you pull off the door panel. 1 of mine stayed stuck in the door and one ended up on the ground.

THANK YOU! I am a 55 year old woman - I have never done any work on any car other than changing a tire (my father made sure I knew how to do that as soon as I learned to drive). With replacement mirror in hand I was able to follow these instructions and completed the installation in about 45 minutes. I looks great, works perfectly, and saved me a bundle of $$. As mentioned before, it doesn't fold in like the original, but we rarely used that feature anyway. Thank you so much for your perfect instructions!
